I’ve been on this Keto diet now for a week.
First 2 days were lousy as I suffered some Keto Flu effects.
Lost 5 pounds over the past week and feeling more normal again... but a bit lighter.

I’ve been thinking about doing this. I’m about 100lb overweight and need to make a big change. I’ve got about a week and a half off next month, planning on then to make it happen.

I suggest going shopping in advance so you have a good selection of Keto-friendly food

Good on you! I know you’re not attempting to lose insane amounts of weight - keto mode is a little hard to maintain over a long time.
What’s your current favourite/goto food?

I took a few classes in Biochemistry in college as part of my chemistry degree and ketogenic metabolism is fascinating from a science standpoint. Congrats on making the switch-over with apparently reltive ease since you seemed afraid it would take longer when you posted about it before.
Don’t have any advice or commentary outside of the fact that I enjoy seeing the spectrum of responses people’s bodies have to various diets like this one that restrict a particular cornerstone of our food sources. Were I to have majored in Biochemistry, I would’ve definitely entered the food sciences industry and studied these effects with vigor. Sadly for humanity, I am a car guy so I went into surface chemistry and now make car care products. But damn if I can’t generate a hell of a shine with a bottle of my own spray wax!

Well before the Keto diet, it was hamburgers. Now that I’m on Keto, it’s a split between eggs and steak and salad

Without eggs and steak I would have died. Sometimes I do a bunless burger no ketchup no mayo which a few places are still happy to do.

As an engineer, I know nothing about chemistry, biology, or dieting. But I have struggled to lose weight over the years (I’m like 15-20lbs heavy, so not awful but not good).
But I recently had this idea - its a bit involved and might be a hard sell for casual people, but it could be good for people who are seriously overweight, if it works . My idea is basically a program where someone spends a couple weeks each on a few different diets. During that time they log what they eat into an app, it would also use a fitness tracker like a smart watch or F itbit to track exercise. Also, this is really reaching, but maybe use blood sugar testing periodically, and maybe even genetic testing. Basically my end goal would be able to help people develop customized diet plans, basically be able to say “Based on these genetic markers, and your bodys response to these diet regimes, and your exercise habits & effectiveness, we think the best diet for you is XYZ”.

As someone with a physiology degree who has taught biology and chemistry for six years, the idea of an engineer with zero knowledge in physiology designing an app that shuffles people through diets is terrifying to me.
However, your idea, if implemented properly, would probably work a lot better than traditional dieting.

FEAR ME!!! MUAHAHAHAHA!!!
So the whole reason I bring this up is to talk to smart people like you who know about this stuff. Theres no way I’d try to implement something like that without having experts involved because I KNOW I know nothing about nutrition or physiology or anything .
But, from what I’ve read and seen, I get the impression that at least part of the problem with traditional dieting is that everyone’s body is a bit different, which is why certain diets work for some people and not others.
As an engineer I do operational testing and evaluation. I col lect lots of data on complex systems and then try to figure out which component is causing which problems. Its a lot of repetitive work, collecting data in different ways (onboard instruments & far field instruments), and trying the same thing at different speeds/operating conditions. So in a way I think the whole dieting thing could be analagous to what I do. The issue is doing it in a safe and healthy manner.

I think it’s a great idea and is spot on in regards to addressing the challenges of dieting. It would basically act like a personal nutritionist, but at a much cheaper cost.
You’re a lot smarter than me, but my advice would be to get some exercise physiologists on board. That’s pretty much what those people do. Maybe see if you can audit a 400 level exercise physiology class as research. That’ll cover the basics of human metabolism in regards to fitness.

Mayo should be okay as it’s mostly made from eggs. Ketchup is higher in carbs due to the sugar content. Though salsa or tomatoes are low-carb ketchup substitutes.
And yeah... steak and eggs... without those, it would be a lot harder to find stuff to keep me full.
I’ve been eating more eggs and I have a beef roast cooking in the oven right now and a pork roast in my fridge waiting to be cooked after the roast beef is done.
I’ve also made myself shrimp salad, salad with tuna or salmon on top.
And for some breakfasts, I’ll change it up and have lower carb nuts like walnuts and cottage cheese.

well shoot, if left to my own devices, that diet is similar to what I would consider ideal. I’d miss rice and the occasional pastry, but it sounds worth it.

One other thing, though they say stuff like bacon and cold cuts are fine under Keto, I try to keep the intake of those down and stick to more lean and lower salt forms of meat as my doctor advised to also reduce salt... and cold cuts and bacon are loaded with salt.
Tied in with that, salt contributes to water retention.

But don’t forget, no beer, juice, soft drinks, regular milk (unsweetened/unflavoured Almond milk is okay) or sugary cocktails either. For drinks, it’s water, dry wine or stuff like vodka, whiskey or other non-sweet liquor.
And forget about cake, crackers, doughnuts, breakfast cereals, bread, pasta, rice, ‘below ground vegetables’ like potatoes or anything that is sweet or breaded.
And none of the ‘sugar-free’ crap that uses fake sugar either.

I’m not saying it will be easy, but IF I had to diet, not giving up red meat, cheese, (never been a fan of heavily processed stuff) chicken wings, whole eggs, and pork products sounds pretty good to me. I’ve never been a huge fan of tubers and roots, maybe in liquid form. I don’t drink much booze as it is, so that shouldn’t be too much of a sacrifice. Fizzy water like flavored water will be tough, but if I drink the 5.4L of water they are saying I should, I won’t have room anyway!

In the case of chicken wings, the wings themselves are fine, but if they’re breaded and/or deep fried, then they’re not Keto friendly.
If they’re baked and don’t have a sweet sauce like honey garlic (Mmmmm... ) or BBQ sauce (Mmmmm... ) then they should be okay.
As for 5.4L of water... my doctor didn’t mention that. Just make sure you stay hydrated and drink a glass of water with each meal and whenever you feel thirsty.

If you fry them in peanut oil they are keto friendly. air fry too. Breaded wings are a no no here, I’ll take them extra crispy with franks red hot cayenne and a little butter.
I stumbled across the water requirement on some sight that sells meal plans and support. You put in your stats, ideal goal weight, and what foods you do and do not want to have as part of your plan. Then pay them $40 and they send you a 28 day meal plan I guess? I didn’t get to the payment part.

Oh yeah seafood salads are the best! In the nuts realm I only like cashews which are a bit of a hard keto sell, so I opt out of those, but light cottage cheese has also grown on me.
